Meet the artist - CARLEY CORNELISSEN

Behind each bilby is a talented artist, bringing their own creativity, style and story to the Bilby Art Trail.  Each artist was invited to transform a bilby into a unique work of art, inspired by their own ideas, experiences and connections.

Meet the artists behind the bilbies and discover the stories, inspiration and creativity behind each one.

a little about Carley

After completing a Fine Arts degree at RMIT in Melbourne in 2006, I then moved to Queensland and am currently Brisbane based.  I have been a finalist in prizes such as the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and the Gold Coast Art Award.  My contemporary Australian flora and fauna art can range from tiny works on paper up to large scale murals and everything in between.

I have been involved in street art festivals such as Brisbane Street Art Festival (BASF) and SURFACE Festival on the Gold Coast as well as completing many private large-scale artworks.

the original concept

Theme:  Welcome to my home

The artwork centres around the natural living environment of the Bilby to celebrate both its beauty and resilience.

The main focus being the Sturt's Desert Pea, a striking Australian wildflower known for thriving in harsh arid conditions.

The botanical elements are woven through the composition to symbolise survival regeneration and the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

My signature patterns and bold use of colour are layered throughout the piece to create a vibrant, energetic visual language.  The use of native desert botanicals and patterns reflect the interconnectedness of native species and their habitats.

The overall palette is intentionally bright and uplifting, using colour as a tool to evoke optimism and care, this artwork aims to spark a sense of hope inviting viewers to reflect on the importance of protecting Australia's unique wildlife and fragile environments.

Six bilbies. Six artists. One big community story. Follow the Charleville Bilby Art Trail, discover the artwork, capture a photo and help us shine a light on the endangered bilby.
