Meet the Artist - DEBRA HOOD

Behind each bilby is a talented artist, bringing their own creativity, style and story to the Bilby Art Trail.  Each artist was invited to transform a bilby into a unique work of art, inspired by their own ideas, experiences and connections.

Meet the artists behind the bilbies and discover the stories, inspiration and creativity behind each one.

a little about Debra

With 40 years' experience as an artist, located in Brisbane, I paint colour-filled Queenslanders surrounded by nature reimagined as explosions of whimsical colour.  I specialise in intricate, colourful and detailed cityscapes that capture the romantic essence of inner-city Brisbane suburbs.

I am passionate about preserving Queensland's iconic domestic architecture and believe that "bland beige architecture" is changing how we live and engage as a community.  I hope my work not only provided joy but is also a loving documentation of the variety of Queenslander homes and their charming architectural detail and heritage.

the original concept

Theme:  Queenslanders in Charleville

Charleville is the home of the Bilby and so this Bilby pays homage to the homes in Charleville! I have selected a number of humble Charleville dwellings that show the towns Queenslander style, domestic architecture.  A playful pink outback dunny adds to the charm and celebration of the town's domestic heritage.  The colours on the black background are symbolic of the colours in the surrounding countryside, red earth, pink sunset reflections, and yellow/green for the foliage.

I will also add in the Palm Tree and Windmill markers along the roadside that all weary drivers they are nearly home and will also add Charleville's oldest tree.

Six bilbies. Six artists. One big community story. Follow the Charleville Bilby Art Trail, discover the artwork, capture a photo and help us shine a light on the endangered bilby.
